interior is Intel PC based and now built IBM-style and the only real way
you can tell the difference is that the onboard CPU/GPU combo and it's
OS are from and operate like an Apple? That makes it an Apple Computer
and not a PC - period? Naaah.
And I never said the 360 was created to be a PC. I said it's a modified
version of a PC controlled by it's OS. I take it everoyne's already forgotten
ole' Billy's big touting rant when he introduced the XBox and flat-out said
it was the 'best parts of a PC, but streamlined for gaming'?
Let's see. It uses and recognizes Windows Networking so you can
hook it into a PC via the NIC port. It runs a modified version of Windows
Media Player 11 so you can do Audio/Video. It has a file system, it has
an OS, just one that's limited to certain functions they provide. It now
has full Instant Messaging using Windows Messenger.... 'bout the only
piece missing is a Browser.
And I'll take it everyone also missed Big Billy's near-final hoorah speech
in the UK where they announced the MS/AT&T cooperative team to take
the 360 console and change the OS so that it can be an all-in-one unit
that'd deliver IPTV (eh, Cable) as well as do what a 360 does now AND
surf like MS's formerly bad purchase of WebTV (read Microsoft TV before
death)?
So they're using one in the UK now... it's a 360, pops into the phone
line with a DSL modem (essentially to compete with Cable) and turns
your set-top box into a giant DVR/Cable Box/Web Surfing/Audio-Video
viewing/Instant Messaging Home Appliance. Freaking PC in a box.
And what'd you think U-verse from AT&T's for now? Once fully tested
on the guinea-pigs in the UK, AT&T will be buying gazillions of 360's
(or even what we'll call 720's depending on timeframe) and leasing them
out to you as an AT&T U-verse customer. You get a 360, Cable TV
in full HD Digital, a DVR and more - screw Cable and Scientific Atlanta's
half-assed attempt. Who wouldn't want that? I can't wait for it! And
the early development rumors were that IF you already have a 360, you
simply get a code update to wipe & reload the OS to be AT&T's new
version and away you go - no leasing or rental fees, just the regular
monthly.
Ya know what they call squished versions of PC's used as web servers
that instead of a full tower, they're 1U rack-mounted devices pre-loaded
with just what they need in hardware and software to do web serving?
Web Appliances (see Colbalt, etc.) Still a PC, still a Server.
So forgive me if I stay with the thoughts a 360's still essentially a PC.
