Depends if you like playing multiplayer games or not.   The xbox Live service is free, so you can purchase arcade games, tv shows and rent movies with a free silver account.  If you want to play MP games over Live, you need the gold account which costs $50 a year.  Which is well worth the $ in my opinion.
