ATI processor lately?
Well, ya kinda can't because AMD hasn't released a commonplace 3-core, but
still... The vid cards comparable to what's inside the 360 are a good $500 just
for openers. And the rest of the system would bring the total up to
at least $2K
if you DIY and those slightly comparable for sale w/warranty, etc. from the big
guys like Alienware and such can push upwards of $4K.
So for sub-$500, ain't nothing wrong with the 360. Quite frankly
ain't nothing
wrong with the PS3 either for it's composition but we're talking 360/PC here.
I just found a box from moving here in my office. Inside was my PC versions
of Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R. and one other I forget offhand. BOTH of those I have
for the 360 and they far outshine the PC versions in many parts, I haven't even
taken these out of this storage box for like over a year! And I don't get much
time on any 360's anymore because everyone else is playing those available
to me (including the little woman's FFXI addiction) and DO have 2 PC's I could
be playing them on - but I won't. FEAR alone drives me insane with it's play.
Why? It's simple guys, I started with PC's long before consoles and the one
advantage the 360 has (same with the PS3 really) is continuity. It's the same
base for all of us, regardless of the game. Make it work once - it works. You
slap that same code on a PC and there's Nvidia, ATI, ECS, ASUS, Intel, AMD
and way too many other factors that can't be controlled to produce the same
result every time you fire it up. And certainly not for the same cost as a game
console.
So PC gaming, which I started on and I love, is a lost art. Very few titles
sit around without a console port at some point. Only those MMORPG's like
Warcraft and such, but hell even then Final Fantasy? PS2, PC AND the 360.
Plays better on the 360 than the PC version. So not even all of those really
qualify as exclusive.
And for the money, OK you slap down $500 on a 360. The 720 comes out
2-3 years later and it's another $500. You spent $1,000. By that same time,
to keep up with the Joneses (we're calling software costs an even draw) on
hardware to play the same game titles - you'd be at least $2K, if not upwards
of double that to keep upgrading your PC.
Based on that, why aren't game consoles the way to go - really? Now they
do half of what Windows does (360) and if someone would make a browser
for the sucker you wouldn't even need a PC. AT&T's nearly ready to push
the modified 360 out as a Cable Box for IPTV, they've played with it in the UK
already. Ain't heard 'bout that with the PS3 <Grin>.
I'm not bashing the PC gaming world as old and washed up, it's more a
comparison of which makes more financial sense - even if it's in short bursts.
I have a laptop and my PC in the office, they aren't going anywhere, but my
gaming time and money is 99% consoles.
