Live.
The sheer fact that I have a persistent list of my friends online and can
quickly voice chat with them at any time, in any game, even in a movie if
desired, is a KILLER app for me. Then you add Live Messenger support and it
gets even better. Bearing in mind the Messenger support isn't even
implemented particularly well (for a start, it slows logging in to Xbox Live
down to crawl these days), but again its a killer for me. The fact that I do
not miss messages from my friends on PC anymore due to having the sound
switched over to the 360 and not seeing the PC flashing at me.
Sure, it could be better. I hate how if someone sends you a message saying
something like "yes" as a response to you, and so you do not bring up the
messenger box because you can read their whole response without doing so. It
then doesnt tell you when they send another message.
Its also a drag that if someone sends you a long message you have to bring up
the chat blade to read it all because it doesn't scroll in the popup window.
But still, its a killer feature I cannot live without.
Then when you get to Xbox Live itself. Again, you have a persistent list of
your friends available at all times to see what they are playing, jump in to
a joinable game, send them messages, etc. I was flabbergasted when I heard
that Sony had neglected to put this support in the PS3 online service after
gloating for months that their service would be BETTER than Xbox Live. I
mean they pulled that trick with the Dreamcast, telling everyone that the PS2
would be SOOOOO much better to convince people not to buy it, and it worked.
Yet it took a few years before the PS2 DID show its full potential and the
Dreamcast had a larger selection of good games for a long long time. So they
were just trying to same tactic again with Xbox 360, hoping people would
believe them. But I digress.
Fact is, PS3 IS a decent console. But Sony dropped the ball on IMPORTANT
aspects that would really piss me off if I owned a PS3.
Having to eat huge chunks of HD space before you can play certain games is a
biggie. Even the Xbox 1 had special cache partitions so that it could
preload game data invisible to the user and without the risk of having to
manually delete a games cache to play another one. The 360 has the same,
although admittedly Microsoft messed up not making the HD mandatory like it
was on Xbox as they could have had a much quieter DVD-ROM drive if they had.
The other thing is as above, the online service. One of the big reasons I
never got in to online games on the PC was the implementation. I do not need
to go into detail as I already have above, but the fact is online gaming is
more fun on 360 because once you have played someone on one game and added
them to your list, you can see what else they are interested in and go "wow,
I love that game too, wanna play?". Of course I cannot mention that without
talking about achievements. Theres just something so cool about being able
to compare how much of a game you have completed against other people on your
friends list. Also, if you get stuck you know who to ask for help. The
whole system of Xbox Live is far more sociable than online gaming ever was
before, which is why I never cared for it before. The PS3 is a step
backwards in that respect and so again I do not think I would care. Also,
making people PAY for a Gold account AND have achievements locked to your
account, it has the advantage that if people act like assholes they have
something to lose so for the most part people act decent. If a service is
free then people disrespect the service as a whole and act like jerks, which
isnt fun at all.
So yeah, while the PS3 technically is a better CONSOLE than the 360 (if you do
not count the RAM restrictions which means that for certain games the 360 has
MORE RAM than the PS3, because you can assign it where you need it), its the
software and infrastructure in general that lets it down. Not to mention the
arrogance of Sony who I find extremely offensive in how they treat their
customers. Microsoft aren't perfect, we all know that, but in generaly they
have a hellova lot more respect for their customers and with bugs and all the
360/Xbox Live still is a revolutionary social system. Nothing else compares,
I know because I NEVER cared about online gaming before it came along.
