[Xbox] Re: Retailers drop HD-DVD add-on to $50

I'm not so sure that digital downloads is the be all and end all that
some think it is. The problem with downloading movies is that if you
download them to your computer's hard drive, you fill up the space.
If you fill up your hard drive, you decrease computer performance and
you reduce room for other things like computer games which are
needing more and more space. Then you're buying bigger hard drives
or external drives. If your drive fails, you loose your movies. You
also loose portability. With DVD, you can stick the disk in any DVD
player anywhere and watch it including your Xbox. If you download it
to your Xbox, guess where it's stuck---in the Xbox unless they come
up with some kind of DVD burner for it. There is the sync kit that
lets you put stuff from your Xbox to your computer's HD but then you
have to unhook your Xbox and drag it over to your computer. Then
there is the whole copying issue. In digital distribution, will they
have some way to prevent copying of the movie after you download it?
They'll almost have to, to prevent an even more massive pirating
problem than they had with DVD before they figured out how to encrypt
them. Some stuff already is downloadable, especially home brew
movies and music that doesn't stand much of a chance of getting
published by hollywood or a big name recording studio. I kinda doubt
that the big media companies will go with a non-physical format, at
least not totally, for a very long time. Don't forget that a large
percentage of people still don't have computers, especially ones fast
enough to do media streaming, and don't have broadband internet. I
know some people who don't even have the option of high speed
internet where they live unless they want to blow the big bucks on
sattelite internet. They still have dial-up as their only real
option. Meanwhile, almost everyone with a TV has a DVD player and
you can get one pretty cheap if you don't want one with all the bells
and whistles. Heck, if you are playing video games with a PS2, Xbox,
PS3 or Xbox 360, you have a regular DVD player. If you already have
a PS3 or the add-on for the 360, you have a high def DVD player.

that the MSRP of the 360 HD-DVD add-on has been reduced from $130 to
$50, cheaper even than a newly-released game. So far, K-mart and
Amazon have reduced their price (and Amazon offering free shipping).
Microsoft has not yet updated their price so this is still
unofficial, but even so, it's likely that other retailers will be
following soon. With the production ending on all HD-DVD players
everywhere, the HD-DVD add-on is now good only as some sort of
obscure collectors item. Then again if you've got a President Grant
burning a hole in your pocket and you've got a hankerin' for some
quick and easy HD movie action, this is a good short-term solution
until all the cheap HD-DVDs dry up. Besides, if you're quick you
could always get these free ones, and then not have to immediately
buy any HD-DVDs at all. Remember the losing format, and look forward
to digital distribution to (with luck and lots and lots of bandwidth)
save us.
