product packaging. There's a little cutout to look in at the S/N barcode
and Mfg Date for inventory reasons, etc. but that's it. MS gave up real
early on the concept of tagging boxes with what's inside and trying to
keep them matched up - smart move.
But let's say you give me a VIN # off a car. I can take that # and go look
up vehicle history records. I can also, primarly, get a decoder and then
tell you when it was made, what model, what options, what came with
it, what size gas tank, etc, etc.
So here, since they've flipped the S/N from what we sent them to
what we're getting back (confirming it's NOT our original console) we
can't use any kind of decoder or lookup even at MS to determine what
it should be. Honestly, with all the junk inside and people who've
modified them with case changes, etc. I would LOVE it if I could punch
in a # and get a little report of the Mfg Date, what model it was (to see
if it's been messed with) what was in it (say, in the case of a DVD-ROM
drive changeout?) and stuff like that.
Then I'd know what's coming, instead I guess I'll just sit here bouncing
around like a kid at Xmas trying not to wet myself guessing what Santy
Ballmer has put in the magical FedEx box!
I still say my money goes on a mish-mosh POS from '06 parts they
were talking about making from the leftovers! LOL
