my cooling system is:  my Xbox360 sits on my Xbox and each are separated from the shelf by 1 inch square pieces of wood about 6 to 8 inches long. Shelf, 1"stick, Xbox, 1"stick, Xbox360. You get the idea.  Behind is a small fan about  4" in diameter (personal fan?) This is tied into a surge protector along with the Xbox360, TV and my little surround sound box. One switch and it all turns on.  I can feel cool air blow out the front of both consoles and I don't take power from the power supply.  Oh yes it sit horizontal and there are several inches of clear space on either side.
