I'm willing to be all bluray/hd-dvd players have a fan in them these days, with all the extra stuff they can do, downloading content and whatnot

But your right, fans are louder than normal, but they don't bother me, it's the dvd drive that gets me, but only when I play late at night without headphones. I do sit probably 12 feet from my 360 though, and the room is pretty big.

I know its mostly the DVD-ROM drive but the fans ARE loud too.

When playing HD-DVDs or movies from DVD (particularly high def stuff which
uses more CPU/GPU power) which do not spin up the DVD-ROM drive to its
super-noisy speed, you can hear the fans start to spin up and they get pretty
loud in their own right. They are the loudest thing in the room compared to
2 PCs and 1xDVR box - all at the same time are quieter.

Even the fan in the HD-DVD drive is stupidly loud. Why does it even NEED a
fan in the HD-DVD drive? That's insane.
