Sorry for the confusion, really. Seems we are in the same book, just on different pages. If there is a way to actually make a difference on Live!....please, tell me where that line starts because I'd love to help. ( I'd also love to be there when that dumbass forgets he's not in his room behind a headset and spouts off the wrong thing(s)....that has to be priceless. ) Maybe some sort of world-wide petition to change the complaint system or something to make M$ aware that we are tired of it and what they have in place isn't helping? I dunno if it would help or if it has been tried, but an idea. On Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 7:40 PM, PSCG Cleveland <pscgcleveland@gmail.com> wrote: Ok, quite a bit more sensible... On the 'little runts', we probably play different games (when I get the chance to actually play vs. giving our customers that ability and sending my worship offerings to Proph because Medicare and SS just don't make the payments on that 65" Plasma!!!) but what I've been treated to has been a majority of kids. I did mention it's all ages-but the worst I've heard have been kids and we're talking the 18 and Under crowd in that batch. And no, I don't waste time pegging the phone morons they're actually rather entertaining and make great targets too! LOL They don't even think of what they're doing and when the girlfriend gets on them for a hot date or bitching them out they lose focus and it's easier than sniping a little 10 year old smartass with a 'tude. So I fully agree and also only peg those who are obviously violating rules of conduct. Like I said originally though, how come Pogo and Square Enix not only nail all kinds of problems like these through the same type of reporting system but they make public examples of those rule violators and refuse to take their money by kicking their accounts? Why isn't MS that responsible when they provide an easy method, really easier than the other two?? That's where I'm stumped. Now, in my line of work I see Gamers of all ages all week long. And yes, I can actually state as fact quite a few folks and families have dropped the Live! hookups and play offline or head-to-head locally due to the offensive language and conduct. And their races aren't singular, it's spread all over the map. So ya, that actually happen! But MS is more worried about everything else to see the 'little problems' And it is more prevalent online where you can be anonymous, even on the PC beyond games. But I've stood witness in tournaments where people have pulled the same stuff so sadly it's all over. They get sucked into the games and forget they're in a room with tons of people playing - spout off something ignorant - then the fun begins. To the point of small riots and worse in some cases. But my business at least tries to stem the tides and deal with the attitudes to keep it clean and enjoyable for everyone. So I try not to see colors, just gamers. Doesn't always work that way but it's part of our gameplan. I'm sorry, your early responses did come off as more of a 'whatever' and maybe that's from the frustration of seeing and experiencing what you have. I'll be the first to admit I'm white as a ghost and about a straight up plain old American so I don't get it in my face like others do, but I step in wherever possible if I see it. But, I do fit into other stereotypes and have been subject to just different forms of the same crap - so I'm more than aware of what's possible. And being around for a long time I've sadly worked in various places and spent enough time on the streets to have seen the nasty side of things as well. So I wasn't trying to nail you for anything, I guess I was just taken aback that someone who's been the victim would sound like they had the least amount of interest in being a part of the solution for this particular subject since it's about gaming and being online. I see you're more active but just in other ways, which is great! On Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 7:53 PM, Majestik <mystamajestik@gmail.com> wrote: Of course I 'tag' the people that deserve it. But, before I go any further, don't dismiss them as "little runts", as that makes it seem like you blame the kids. More "adults" seem to bring this type of behavior to the table than kids, in my experience. I don't, however, file a complaint on every person that sings or talks in a squeaky voice....or those that talk on the phone while they play or yell down to their mothers without muting their mic. That, in my opinion, is unnecessary and floods the system with foolish complaints. For those people, before I opted to only hear my Friend List, I used the 'Mute' feature. Simple enough, and that's what the tool is for. Filing an actual complaint for that obviously doesn't work....and I can see why. I'll need some clarification on when I played the 'race card'....because, all I did was tell you straight what I have experienced....and if I went in to detail, you'd cringe at the thought of comparing that to hearing the "N" word on a headset from some person that you'll never meet showing off. never did I use my race as anything other than what it was - a first hand example....not a bunch of people who have never had to actually deal with the true detriment of racism. I can tell you this, in my time I have seen almost equal parts racism from my people and against them. Both sides are terribly wrong and meed to be punished for it an taught a lesson. I'm not laying anything on just one side. Maybe I should have been clearer...but I didn't think I needed to go into such detail. I have seen things most will only see on TV or in movies or the News. People dead, people hurt and just plain ignorance. Things that I hope you NEVER have to see, nor do your kids or family and friends. That could be why when you bring up words, it just doesn't seem to be that big of a deal....and easily avoided on a gaming console. When was the last time you told a racist or a bigot on Live! to shut up and it worked? I'm not saying it isn't possible...I've just never seen it happen. Just makes matters worse. We all agree that the "system" M$ has in place is a joke....and will continue to be as long as complaints can be filed for things like singing. I can't imagine that every complaint can be looked at when they are flooded with complaints against people just because they didn't win a game of Madden or got beat in Rainbow Six all night....let alone just disliking someone's accent even though they did nothing wrong to them. Until M$ decides to spend more time actually dealing with the racists and bigots, rather than hunting down and punishing the Hackers and Game Savers - nothing will get done. SO, like I originally stated - use the other tools that have been provided and use them to the best of your ability. It isn't like you have zero recourse....and it's easier than getting frustrated every time someone decides to show you what new words and derogatory terms they learned that day. You wanna truly fight racism and bigotry, do it at home...and with every child you meet ( family, friends, etc. ). Racism is learned and that is fact. Period. The "adults" are mostly too far gone....but getting a hold of kids and "young adults" and teaching them right is the only true way to fight it and maybe, hopefully, stamp it out. Xbox won't do it. Why would they? You think racism has caused anyone to drop their subsciption to Live! or sell their 360? I sure don't....and, apparently, neither does Microsoft. That's what you wrote essentially, that Sessler's basically a raving idiot and everyone who hears something they don't like or agree with should simply tune out and block the morons vs. taking some sort of active role in helping to stop it. What your words certainly sounded like was 'get over it, deal with it, get on with your life and Sessler should try it too'. That's missing my point. My point was dismissal and ignorance of a problem doesn't solve it. No, I don't want you to teach my kids or anyone else's for that matter from what I've seen. It's great you do something about the general problem, but what you posted here certainly sounded the exact opposite. If that's not what you meant, don't get all pissy and put it off on the rest of us with the 'I'll stay out of it' bit either. This reply is the first I've seen you say you do all that you're claiming you do. And again, that's great but it was discussed that the system MS uses isn't effective and Sessler's even saying the same thing. Your reply essentially said 'oh well' and I don't recall seeing you mention you even tag the little runts who need to learn better in the Live! environment. The Pitchforks and Torches - that's my point exactly. Overdramatizing things and then dismissing them like nothing is why the problem never goes away. A more intelligent answer would be heard a whole lot better than a 'deal with it and quit crying'. You want to march on Microsoft, that's your problem. Sessler's saying we need to make our points to them to get some changes to happen. Nothing wrong with that at all. And then playing the race card? Don't worry Pogo, I'm done on this as well because it's a brick wall. Anyone who whips that card out of the deck needs to find a mirror and stare at it until they realize they're where the source of the problem is and not point at everyone else is sight and lay blame. I can't even believe most of that junk when I read it, it does explain a whole lot, that's for sure. Your saying 'whatever'. That's about as ignorant as the racism, sexual and noise-making crap in the first place. On Fri, Jun 13, 2008 at 5:58 PM, Majestik <mystamajestik@gmail.com> wrote: How have I "ignored" it? Any suggestions? I'd love to hear what else I am responsible for. Want me to teach your kids, too. Or, do you want me to march on M$ offices and demand satisfaction? You bring the torches....I'll grab the pitchforks. Meet me around back. What I DON'T do, is allow some people who I will never have a chance to meet effect me to the point where I am crying to a bunch of other people I don't know about how they have affected my life in a negative way. What I WON'T do, is allow you or anyone else dictate to me what my "moral responsibility" is to my fellow gamers. That's a joke. I'm not your Father, Mother, Uncle or even your Guidance Counselor - what I am, is a grown man that has seen more hatred and violence because of the color of my skin than I'd care to. Why would I allow words to effect me or the way I raise my kids? I have more important things to worry about...and bought a 360 to play games with - not use it as a "moral compass". The battles I have fought ( and continue to fight ) are the ones that actually have a chance of effecting me - the ones that are right in my face every day I walk out the door. And the guy that stated he and his friends are busy firing off message after message because some kid is whistling and singing....you wonder why M$ doesn't get to all of the complaints - or doesn't take them all seriously? Singing is a FAR cry from racism/sexism/etc. Pick your battles and use your friggin' mute feature to handle the singing. Use your feedback and your complaint filing for the serious stuff and maybe M$ will start looking in to them. Honestly, if you ( and by "you" I mean anyone - no one specific ) allow others to dictate how you are made to feel....you have bigger problems than this. Put down the 360 controller and get some help before the real world shows up at your door and you have no clue what it looks like. I'll stay out of this conversation from now on....as it seems any disagreement on this subject isn't taken very well. Have fun with this....and good luck with the Crusade. In the real world ( where I, amongst the millions of others, deal with it every day ), we have no "mute" feature....and we will never have a feature that allows us to decrease the chances of running into those people again. We can't simply click on them and make them go away....which would be nice, but impossible. This is not to say I think that people should be able to spit hatred/sexism/etc. from behind a headset....not at all. It's just that on Live!, you are handed ways to combat racism that you will NEVER be afforded the chance to use in real life. Use them and you can easily avoid the problems that arise. In short, Sessler challenges Xbox Live users who feel the need to spew racist and homophobic remarks in order to convey their emotions during gaming to actually think about what they're saying. We encountered a similar experience while playing Uno during our last X3F LIVE event, where a kid--who couldn't have been older than 10, thought it was important to express all of the new slurs he had learned (from the schoolyard and probably also from his Xbox Live sessions). The issue is huge and disgusting. Sessler couldn't be more accurate when he says that we fight so hard to remove the negative stigma's attributed to gamers while ignoring the fact that we're becoming one of the biggest, and organized, bigotry groups in the world. Listen up because we're only saying this once. Yelling racial and homophobic remarks doesn't make you cool and it isn't funny to anyone else in the room, so ditch those comments and get more creative. Quit being the reason why we hate the service we pay for, it only makes us all look bad and removes all arguments that gaming is the revolution in connected entertainment. As now former Microsoft marketing exec Jeff Bell once said, "Your contribution to society is ... what?" The video can be found after the jump.
